"Metro" is an English word that has several meanings, but it generally refers to a rapid transit system in an urban area, such as a subway or underground railway.
The word "metro" is derived from the French word "métropolitain," which means "metropolitan." "Métropolitain" was the name given to the Parisian subway when it opened in 1900. The Parisian subway was the first modern rapid transit system, and it served as a model for other cities to follow.
The word "métropolitain" is composed of two parts: "métro" and "politain." "Métro" is a shortened form of "chemin de fer métropolitain," which means "metropolitan railway." "Politain" is derived from the Greek word "polis," which means "city." Therefore, "métropolitain" means "city railway."
